VCCC Alliance Cancer Communities Forum

Wednesday 13 September

The VCCC Alliance Cancer Communities Forum is a no-holes-barred forum that is presented and led by leading cancer experts and consumers.

Targeted therapies have progressed in leaps and bounds in recent years and are a key aspect of current cancer research. The term refers to matching the right drugs or treatments to a person, based on a genetic or molecular understanding of their disease. Techniques and medicines are rapidly progressing and new cutting-edge technologies such as personalised mRNA cancer vaccines are emerging.

We are edging closer to effective treatments for many cancers and even cures for some patients. But are targeted therapies right for everyone? What can patients expect from this new era of tailored treatments? How do patients feel about it? And what does this mean for other treatments such as immunotherapy, surgery, radiation and chemotherapy?

Aim: To explore the opportunities and challenges of cancer genomics and personalised medicine.

Learning objective: By the end of the forum, you will have had the opportunity to consider:

  • What is precision oncology and what does it mean for patients?

  • Can it cure cancer?

  • Is it suitable for all types of cancer?

  • How do patients feel about precision oncology? What are their concerns?

  • How can patients contribute to the science and its translation into care?

  • How can we ensure everyone benefits?
