Navigating the B3 Conundrum

Presented by the VCCC Alliance and BREASTSURGANZ, this webinar aims to address the challenges and complexities surrounding the management of patients with inconclusive biopsy results, specifically B3 lesions.

Join an esteemed panel of experts to delve into the pathological, diagnostic, and treatment-related dilemmas that healthcare providers face when confronted with these uncertain cases.

Dr Yuan Tian will present a review of current guidelines for the management of premalignant lesions before Professor Gelareh Farshid discusses the long-term risk of breast cancer associated with ductal epithelial hyperplasia, atypical ductal hyperplasia and non-invasive lobular neoplasia (ALH and LCIS). 

A panel discussion and Q&A will follow moderated by Dr Jane Fox and Dr Corinne Ooi, with Professors Phillips and Farshid joining to provide their perspectives on the B3 conundrum.

Aim:

Participants will gain valuable insights and practical guidance in the management of patients with B3 lesions, as well as patients experiencing the uncertainty and anxiety stemming from inconclusive biopsy results.

Dr Jane Fox
Breast Surgeon, Director of Breast Services, Monash Health

Dr Jane Fox is the Director of Breast Services at Monash Health, encompassing breast surgery and Monash BreastScreen. She holds a senior role in the multidisciplinary team that includes medical imaging, medical oncology and radiation oncology at the Monash Cancer Centre and is a senior lecturer at the Monash University Department of Surgery.

Jane’s practice encompasses the assessment and management of benign breast problems including symptoms and imaging abnormalities. She is a member of several committees and groups involved in improving outcomes for patients with breast cancer, including BreastSurg ANZ and the Southern Metropolitan Integrated Cancer Service, where she is Chair of the Breast Cancer Stream.

Jane is committed to subspecialist multidisciplinary care for patients with breast cancer and helping patients to clearly understand their illness and treatment options. She is involved in clinical research, particularly in the assessment of tumour responses to pre-operative treatment and achieving optimal surgical outcomes.

Dr Yuan Tian
BreastSurgANZ PFT Program Trainee (Second Year), Monash Hospital

Dr Yuan Tian is currently a second year BreastSurgANZ fellow at Monash Health. Having graduated from the University of Melbourne in 2013, she undertook general surgical training at Alfred Health, Melbourne, and was awarded her fellowship with the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons in 2022. During her training, she also completed a master's degree in Traumatology with distinction through University of Newcastle in 2017. She completed her first year BreastSurgANZ training at Concord Hospital, Sydney, and is currently completing a master's degree in advanced surgery (breast surgery) through the University of Sydney. 

Professor Gelareh Farshid
Pathologist, Royal Adelaide Hospital

Professor Gelareh Farshid is an international expert in breast and soft tissue pathology with substantial experience in population-based screening for breast cancer. She is Senior Consultant Pathologist at Royal Adelaide Hospital and Clinical Professor at the Schools of Medicine and Medical Sciences at The University of Adelaide. Gelareh is an executive on the boards of several professional bodies, including the Australasian IAP and the Australian Society of Breast Diseases In 2020 she was honored by admission into the International Skeletal Society. 

Among other roles, Gelareh has is a member of the International Collaboration on Cancer Reporting for resected lymph nodes in breast cancer and chairs the RCPA’s multidisciplinary expert group working on the Structured Reporting of Breast Cancer. Gelareh is a member of the Scientific Advisory Committee of the ANZ Breast Cancer Trials group.

Gelareh combined full-time clinical responsibilities with applied clinical research.

Dr Corinne Ooi
Monash Health and Monash University

Dr Corinne Ooi is Visiting Medical Officer at Monash Health and Monash Breastscreen, as well as the supervisor of surgical training at Monash Health and a senior lecturer at Monash University. Corinne is committed to breast cancer research with involvement in multiple clinical trials, having a particular interest in both benign breast disease and breast cancer treatment. She has been involved in developing the intraoperative radiotherapy program at Monash and is interested in de-escalating treatment strategies for patients. Corinne studied at Monash University with training at The Alfred and Monash Health, and had completed a breast fellowship at Waikato Hospital in New Zealand with further training in oncoplastic surgery.
