Examining the spatial heterogeneity of high grade glioma

21 Jul 2023

High-grade gliomas are aggressive primary brain cancers with poor response to standard regimens, driven by immense heterogeneity.

Dr Sarah Best will explore a high-resolution molecular map of glioblastoma (GBM) and IDH-mutant high-grade glioma patient samples to investigate the cellular communities that compose high-grade glioma using digital spatial profiling and spatial molecular imaging.

In glioblastoma (GBM), increased intra-tumoral heterogeneity is associated with more aggressive disease. Spatial technologies can dissect this complex heterogeneity within the tumor ecosystem by preserving cellular organization in situ.

The VCCC Alliance Precision Oncology Forum is chaired by Dr Stephen Luen, Medical Oncologist at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.

Aim: To investigate the cellular communities that compose high-grade glioma using digital spatial profiling and spatial molecular imaging.

Learning Objective: In this session, you will gain a greater insight into the molecular map of glioblastoma (GBM) and IDH-mutant high-grade glioma patient samples and how they are used to investigate the cellular communities that compose high-grade glioma using digital spatial profiling and spatial molecular imaging.

Dr Sarah Best

Dr Sarah Best
Laboratory Head, Brain Cancer Research Lab, WEHI

Dr Sarah Best is a Laboratory Head and fundamental biology lead in the Brain Cancer Research Lab. In this position, Sarah brings her expertise from multiple solid tumours to tackle the challenges of brain cancer. Together with Dr Saskia Freytag (bioinformatics lead) and Dr Jim Whittle (neuro-oncology lead), the Brain Cancer Research Lab has a strong focus on implementing emerging spatial technologies to better understand the immense heterogeneity of adult glioma.

Dr Best has been supported by Carrie’s Beanies for Brain Cancer (CB4BC), the Victorian Cancer Agency, Cancer Australia, Cancer Council Victoria, the MRFF and the NHMRC. Her interest lies in the genetics of solid tumours, with a focus on the design of personalised therapeutics for patients.
